“PUSHOUT” is a hour long documentary on the educational and judicial disparities facing Black girls in the United States. The screening and discussion will examine the criminalization and miseducation of Black girls that has led to overly harsh school disciplinary practices, alarming high school dropout rates, and involvement into the juvenile justice system. PUSHOUT will look at paternalistic juvenile courts who do not understand the unique challenges these girls face, and a lack of community based, culturally competent and gender sensitive responses. This type of criminalization of Black girls disrupts one of the most important protective factors in a girl’s life – education.
