Undergraduate student nurses and clinical practice and academic educators are invited to join together to explore and identify the surgical care required by the patient across the perioperative continuum. This interactive workshop will use an unfolding case study to identify the patient’s, families’, and staffs’ needs. Areas to be explored using the unfolding case study are teamwork, prevention of complications, and hand-off/hand-over. Quality, safety, and education for nurses will be used to follow the patient through the pre-, intra-, and, post-operative continuum of care with emphasis on intraoperative care. This experience will assist in identifying how a perioperative clinical experience is an invaluable opportunity for students to gain understanding of the perioperative RN’s contribution to safe patient care. Upon completion of the workshop, students will have the opportunity to accompany a perioperative RN, in small groups, to visit the exhibit floor and learn how the medical device industry provides support to the perioperative nurse. Following the close of the session, students are invited to attend concurrent educations and the general session to complete their day long perioperative experience.
