Billie Fernsebner, MSN, RN, became the second perioperative clinical nurse specialist in 1977 after convincing the faculty at Boston University of the need for such a role. As she carved the role for herself, she held a reverence for the past and the trails that were blazed by legendary leaders from the past. She also felt a paradoxical contentment with the present but a strong desire to shape the future. She developed and published four editions of the first competency-based Core Curriculum for Perioperative Nursing. With her numerous writings and presentations, she always kept in mind the history that she was contributing to. Billie's contributions and accomplishments led to her being named the sixth recipient of the Award for Excellence in Perioperative Nursing. She believes that innovations in the past made our profession strong and innovations today and in the future will keep us strong. Billie was the second recipient of the AORN Foundation's Philanthropist Award. No conflict.
