Stephanie Barman worked in the operating room as a certified nursing assistant for 5 years and as a registered nurse for an additional 7 years. At UnityPoint Health - Meriter, a partner of UW Health, she is designated as a "clinical nurse III." She graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Madison Bachelor of Science in Nursing completion program in May 2015. She has been the Gynecologic & High Risk Obstetrics Surgery Nurse Coordinator for over 3 years which combines her nursing experience with her Bachelor of Arts degree in Women's Studies from UW Madison earned in 2004. She is CNOR certified, is a BLS Instructor, an ACLS provider, and is active in Shared Governance as a two time Unit Council Chairperson, past chair of Perioperative Unit Council, and current member of the hospital wide Leadership Council. In March 2016 she became a Master Trainer for TeamSTEPPS in the Operating Room and has helped champion TeamSTEPPS implementation and sustainability since that time. For her 2018 unit-based quality improvement project, Stephanie researched, outlined, and implemented a process improvement project pertaining to the improved waste stream practices in the operating room. She submitted it for her hospital's Nurses Week Poster Fair and submits it to the 2019 AORN Global Conference for consideration in the Clinical poster category. She has a passion for reducing the environmental impact of surgical services and this project was her first success as the hospital wide Green Team Lead. In this role, she spreads "green" practices to other units of the hospital by mentoring champions and giving presentations. She has been a guest speaker at the statewide Wisconsin Forum on Healthcare Sustainability and has collaborated within her health system to improve and hone sustainability practices throughout that system.
