Compliance with hand hygiene by perioperative nursing staff has been shown to be very low. Understanding of general hand hygiene principles, My Five Moments, and their application to the perioperative setting is the first step. A quality improvement project was completed to assess whether a perioperative specific educational program can increase knowledge on hand hygiene and My Five Moments by perioperative nursing staff. Improvements in knowledge test scores was shown overall and in all subgroups. The material presented in the educational program was shown to be applicable to both registered nurses and surgical technologists.
