Our work began in 2013 when the injury rate in one OR suite increased to alarming levels and our Management Engineer at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston, Massachusetts, recommended that a standardized approach to injury reduction using structured observations be implemented in order to reduce injury. He had experience with this process and felt that it could be effectively adapted for use in the health care environment. Applied in a large medical center over a five year period in four different departments, marrying continuous improvement with process safety methodology, such as job safety behavioral observations (JSBO) and job safety analysis (JSA), teams have reduced injury to staff by up to 85% or over 489 days away from work due to injury on the job.
