Thermal Disinfection and Preservation of Semicritical Products for Ventilatory Assistance & Alcohol-based Surgical Hand Antisepsis: Microbial Counts With Different Procedure Lengths (Brazil) #1046 (1.00 CH)

Part 1-A research study was conducted to examine the thermal disinfection process of respiratory care products that were contaminated in a laboratory-controlled environment with American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) Pseudomonas aeruginosa. After thermal disinfection, the products were packed in a barrier system designed for disinfected instrumentation and stored under controlled conditions of humidity and temperature. After 70 days, no evidence of contamination was found following the thermal disinfection process and barrier system storage.
Part 2-A descriptive comparative study on hand hygiene at a tertiary private hospital in Brazil will be discussed. Microbiological samples were collected from the hands of 54 surgeons after hand washing to determine the base microbial flora count and after surgical antisepsis to identify the immediate reduction in microbial count. Findings suggest that there is a large reduction in bacterial count after surgical hand antisepsis when the recommended technique is followed.
