In today's health care environment, it can be very difficult to provide experiences to the OR nurse in order to acquire advanced scrubbing skills for complex cases. Opportunities for gaining practical skills and the necessary experiences to become a competent scrub nurse do not present themselves on a reliable and scheduled basis, particularly pronounced in the cardiac perioperative nursing team where the cardiac patient is critically ill and each surgical procedure requires advanced skills. To shorten the time frame from novice to advanced clinician, and ultimately, expert nurse, we developed a cardiac skills simulation program.
