Bone cement implantation syndrome (BCIS) is a potentially fatal complication of orthopedic surgeries that use cement. Clinical presentation is a cascade beginning with hypoxia and hypotension, and if not reversed, ending in right-sided heart failure and cardiac arrest. A case study will be used as the framework for providing a comprehensive explanation of bone cement, the identification and management of BCIS, and the roles of the perioperative team in the event of cardio-pulmonary collapse.

Learning Objectives:

• Discuss the etiology of Bone Cement Implantation Syndrome (BCIS), including how it may manifest as physiologic changes in the patient.
• Identify opportunities for improved patient safety through education and practice of perioperative team roles in the event of BCIS and cardio-pulmonary collapse.
• Identify opportunities for improved patient outcomes through education and practice of perioperative team roles in the event of BCIS and cardio-pulmonary collapse.
