Transgender and gender nonconforming individuals are at increased risk for negative physical and mental outcomes and face numerous health disparities, stigma, discrimination, and a lack of access to quality health care. A comprehensive understanding of common terminology, health risks, health disparities, surgical procedures, and interventions utilized to support transgender individuals is essential to providing supportive quality perioperative care. Obstacles faced by nurses who care for transgender individuals and the development of an educational program to support the learning needs of perioperative staff are discussed.
