Transgender and gender nonconforming individuals are at increased risk for negative physical and mental outcomes and face numerous health disparities, stigma, discrimination, and a lack of access to quality health care. A comprehensive understanding of common terminology, health risks, health disparities, surgical procedures, and interventions utilized to support transgender individuals is essential to providing supportive quality perioperative care. Obstacles faced by nurses who care for transgender individuals and the development of an educational program to support the learning needs of perioperative staff are discussed.

Learning Objectives:

• Discuss the key terms and definitions necessary to provide a respectful and affirming environment of care for Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer ("LGBTQ") patients undergoing surgical procedures.
• Provide an overview of the many health risks and other disparities facing transgender patients and gender non-conforming individuals.
• Present the development of a multi-phase educational program for perioperative satellite nurses to foster an affirming environment of care for evolving transgender and gender non-conforming patients.
