Perioperative nurses consistently aim to improve the quality of care and workflow processes in the OR and to discover evidence-based, innovative solutions for common perioperative challenges. In our organization, Lean Methodology and Six Sigma paired with Gemba walks were initiated in July of 2016 in the OR. This presentation discusses our experiences with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and how they can positively affect any OR. As an organization, we are using KPIs as a way to collaborate with senior leadership to address areas for improvement such as OR scheduling, first case start times, and communication among interdisciplinary units. Ideally, KPIs support frontline staff and senior leadership to evaluate the success of the organization. Goals are set by the frontline staff with good understanding of the needs in the OR and these are subsequently presented to senior leadership during daily Gemba walks. The concept “Gemba” refers to an approach where staff presents to leadership at the point of care, a place where value is created. This is a unique opportunity, and a transparent strategy to combine common goals of staff and leadership to solve problems within the OR. KPIs also place the responsibility and accountability into the perioperative team’s hands to collect, analyze, and present data using the Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) method, and subsequently, create action plans to improve efficiency in the perioperative arena. Utilizing this strategy allows the team to discover and understand patterns and successes of their individual perioperative unit.
