The increasing incidence of autism over the years, the characteristics associated with this disease, and useful interventions that may be utilized when a patient with autism needs to come to the hospital and/or have surgery will be shared. What has happened in the past few years to bring attention to this population? How have we helped them mainstream into society? How do we look ahead and progress public perception? Learn how to enhance the care of the patient with autism during their hospital stay and beyond.

Learning Objectives:

• Identify incidence of Autism today as compared to past years, while also identifying characteristics of the patient with autism.
• Identify at least three interventions that can be used to enhance the care of this population in the hospital.
• Identify at least one public icon depicting autism in today’s society.
