Ophthalmic surgery has made tremendous advances in the breadth of procedures offered, the accuracy and capability of instrumentation and the understanding and avoidance of many complications. Parents are turning to surgical correction over glasses for their children as soon as is feasible. Young adults claim increased confidence after no longer depending on eyeglasses. Our aging population seeks corrective surgery for a number of age-related diminishing-sight impairments that for so many threaten to change their golden years into the blurry dark lonely years. Each of these age categories represent expanding patient populations, with the elderly representing the highest growth potential. In this course, each of the major procedures will be summarized with the condition treated, basic surgical techniques, and complications encountered. Other topics include the advantages of thorough patient preparation, environmental contributors to poor outcomes, and correction of poor practices amongst OR and sterile processing staff members.
