Systemic toxicity from the injection or overdose of local anesthetics is a rare and potentially fatal complication. As preoperative nurses, it is our responsibility to be aware of the risk of local anesthetic toxicity, the signs and symptoms of local anesthesia toxicity, and how to appropriately manage the patient who is experiencing this very serious complication. Local anesthesia toxicity will be reviewed and the audience will be introduced to management of local anesthetic toxicity, including the concept of lipid rescue therapy.
