Leadership & Management
Our Journey From the Back Table to the Boardroom #2012 (1.00 CH)
When one makes the decision to start a career in the OR, foreseeing the possibility of becoming a Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) seems incredibly out of reach. While perioperative nursing is not the usual career path to the executive suite, it is not out of the realm of possibilities. In the infancy of one’s perioperative career, the OR nurse is developing skills, which will serve him/her throughout his/her journey such as effective communication, critical thinking, focusing on efficiencies, and adherence to standards and guidelines. Mastering skills, such as the ability to cultivate relationships, being comfortable with numbers, savvy with operations, regulatory knowledge, and innovative with Human Resources, and continuously building personal leadership skills, as a budding perioperative nurse leader will quickly facilitate one’s comprehension of the requirements for the next level of leadership: executive nursing.
