Join me for a closer look at the complexity point in the FRQ section of the AP history exams. We will explore what constitutes complexity, learn what it looks like in others’ historical writing and explore how to instruct students so that they, too can identify it. From there we will move on to a discussion of strategies for scaffolding instruction to take students from a basic “claim and evidence” argument to one that demonstrates a complex understanding of the question at hand. We will finish up with a look at some student work to see what a complex understanding looks like and how it can be taught and then effectively assessed in your own classroom.
