World History teachers were caught unprepared when it was announced that the first three units were going to be eliminated. Veterans saw the potential benefits of covering less material, but also were concerned about the loss of significant cultural developments, particularly the rise of Islam and the Mongols. Some even suggested that the course would favor European history alone. This session rejects this last suggestion and shows ways in which the world, specifically the Middle East, is heavily represented in the course’s Key Concepts. Participants will partake in an analysis and discussion of the Key Concepts and how they demonstrate a diverse view of world history. Participants will then use the Key Concepts to develop content and skill instruction on the Middle East, with examples of the DBQ, LEQ, and SAQ developed by the presenter. *Some changes regarding the units will be incorporated with the release of the new curriculum outline in early 2019.
