Many English Language Learners (ELLs) struggle with how to begin or how to build an essay. It is important for those students to build a proper foundation for writing in order to tackle the AP Literature and Composition Exam. Therefore, beginning with an essay blueprint that is scaffolded to meet each student at their level, is the first building block to that foundation. As a result of the session, participants will be provided with strategies to support ELLs with mastery in essay writing. Participants will be able to help students build a foundation for writing by providing writing scaffolds for students on their level and gradually releasing them as they push students to their "zone of proximal development." This will allow students to level up by learning how to organize their writing, first, through a formulaic process; then, expanding writing by providing sentence frames and using SEAL, and adding voice to create more authentic essays.
