Analytical reading and writing in science allow students to gain, retain, and apply scientific knowledge, which enhances conceptual understanding. Analytical reading and writing also supports science practices necessary for college-level science coursework, and therefore prepares students for success on the AP free-response questions. Analytical reading requires students to extract, synthesize, and compare complex information, often by moving between texts and multiple representations, such as tables and graphs. Students can then use that information to craft scientific arguments. During this session, participants will engage in instructional strategies that illustrate how to increase student engagement, conceptual understanding, and scientific reasoning skills through analytical reading and writing.
