The ability to analyze data collected while investigating our natural world is a critical practice for scientists. Once collected, data must be translated into forms that can be analyzed in an attempt to reveal meaningful patterns and relationships. Since these patterns and relationships are not immediately obvious, students must apply skills – such as mathematical and statistical thinking, graphing, tabulation of results, developing models, and communication to others. Therefore, during this session, participants will explore how the HHMI BioInteractive teacher and student resources support students engaging in the Pre-AP Biology program shared principles and areas of focus (science practices). We will illustrate how to increase student engagement and scientific reasoning skills through data analysis and interpretation activities. We will also explore how to assess students’ knowledge and reasoning while engaging with data-driven activities.
