Given the rapid growth of AP in high schools over the past decade, what do we know about students’ AP course- and exam-taking behavior? This session provides answers to such questions as: How many AP Exams do students take and pass, and how has this changed over time? Why do students take AP courses and exams? Which ones do they take, and when do they start? An interactive session in which attendees are invited to discuss their AP programs in light of our findings, suggest messaging for students, and brainstorm future research questions. Other topics addressed: how many courses students have potential for vs. take; whether there's an optimal number of exams to take; whether some students take too much AP; how earning a low score affects AP-taking later in high school; and how exam-taking varies by race and income. Also addresses guidance administrators and teachers give students regarding AP course and exam-taking and asks what guidance, if any, The College Board should give.
