The 2018 congressional election will impact the balance of power in the United States. Beginning in 2019, the United States will again face divided government, with the House of Representatives under Democratic control. This session will examine voter turnout rates, changes in demographics, and patterns of turnout by region and income. Lessons presented include information about how to help students analyze public opinion polls, examine pie charts and line graphs containing data about demographic shifts, understand voter turnout rates, and assess electoral outcomes. Participants will learn how to help their students draw conclusions about the potential political consequences of electoral shifts. Using strategies based on the new AP U.S. Government and Politics curriculum, teachers will identify the key takeaways that can be drawn from the election of 2018 for AP students.
