Spanish Literature and Culture
AP Annual Conference Submission
When we look to include authentic materials in our language classes, what we select tends to focus mainly on non-fiction sources (articles, infographics, tables, charts, graphs, etc.) as the primary texts for engaging in interpretive communication in our classes. However, literature is authentic material, too! Exposure to literature encourages creativity and most importantly, introduces students to the nuances of culture that are only possible to explore through the study of literary texts. Participants in this session will explore rationales for incorporating literature in their Pre-AP and AP Spanish Language & Culture courses, learn how to evaluate literary works for appropriateness for the different levels, and participate in discussions about how and when to teach literature. Handouts, resources, and copies of all activities will be provided to all participants.
