In this session, participants will examine the free-response questions from the 2019 AP Statistics Exam, presented by the Chief Reader. Participants will consider and discuss common student misunderstandings for each question, along with teaching tips intended to increase students’ knowledge of the relevant concepts and skills. Based on a question-by-question analysis, participants will take away knowledge of what the exam questions were assessing, insights into how the scoring guidelines assessed student understanding, and suggestions for how to improve student performance on related questions. New guidelines for free response question structure and scoring for the 2020 exam will be reviewed. Participants will learn how to deepen students’ understanding of statistical concepts and practice, and will enhance their ability to prepare students for the kinds of questions that appear on the exam.
