This session provides participants with two strategies to promote oral and written communication: Quick Writes and Thought Prompts. Participants will differentiate Quick Writes from Thought Prompts and explore the purpose and value of each one. A Quick Write is when a student reacts to a visual or auditory stimulus quickly by writing down vocabulary and/or his/her impressions to use as a basis for an oral activity. Thought Prompts, which are of greater length, can stand alone or can be a part of a longer writing assignment. Participants will examine how to utilize each one, whether as a springboard or as a culminating activity. Drawing from a broad spectrum of examples across a variety of themes, participants will acquire strategies to create their own scaffolded Quick Writes and Thought Prompts to stimulate communication, from Novice to AP level. Participants will then design a Quick Write and a Thought Prompt of their own.
