In this session participants will learn how to teach the topic of food across levels. They will explore how to build on this theme starting from traditional Novice level activities of stating meal times and describing food preferences. We will examine how to spiral this theme throughout various levels of study by examining the role of food in traditional celebrations and in national and ethnic identity, global issues of food shortage causes, environmental impacts on food production, obesity, and eating disorders, as well as changing eating habits in our modern world. Participants will acquire scaffolded strategies and activities that promote the teaching of the theme of food from Novice to AP levels, and will learn how it cross-references with many of the AP themes, from Families and Communities to Personal and Public Identities, Global Challenges and Contemporary Life. Participants will share their own approaches and strategies to teaching this topic at different levels.
