A review of the AP Biology Exam data indicates that students have recurring challenges: performing mathematical routines, constructing and interpreting data from various types of graphs, and applying these practices to AP Biology content. Participants will review how these practices and content might merge in the various units of instruction throughout the course, and they will actively engage in two lessons pertinent to the identified areas of challenge. The expectation is that participants will preview and analyze instructional techniques for the challenge areas and debrief their implementation in the classroom. To conclude the session, two or three assessment items in these areas will be given to participants, depending on the time remaining. After examining the assessment items, participants will connect the instructional strategies from the session with performance on the assessment items in order to assist their students.
