Exam data shows that students struggle with identifying and evaluating the argument in sources. This session will address this challenge with three activities such as Structured Academic Controversy, interactive evidence-based argument development, and application of historical thinking skills to create effective argumentation. The focus will be identifying and understanding key issues in Native American (NA) history and linking them to broader historical processes in various time periods and use those issues to teach historical thinking skills. For example, how NA and European relationships were shaped over competition for land, shifting alliances and trade routes; NA relationships with the young American nation, during Manifest Destiny, during western development; and, Native American identity and the Civil Rights movement.
