Students often miss the link between how and what kinds of data were collected and the appropriate method of analysis. This session is designed to illustrate the statistical problem solving process: ask a question, collect data, analyze data, interpret results. Participants will use freely available online applets to analyze data and perform both simulation-based and traditional inference in two real-world settings: a sample survey involving categorical data and a randomized experiment involving quantitative data. Participants will discuss the appropriate scope of inference in each case. Finally, participants will explore an applet that presents a research question with a brief description of how the data were produced, and then asks what inference method should be used. Participants will discuss how to use these applets to deepen students’ statistical understanding.
