In order to be successful in AP Chemistry students need to be able to recognize, use, generate and translate between different representations of matter and physical and chemical transformations. Representations students encounter include several types of equations, particulate drawings, data tables, macroscopic descriptions, and several kinds of diagrams and graphs. This session will focus on strategies for integrating multiple representations into all different types of learning activities, including lab work, assessments, computer-based simulations, and daily practice. Session participants will engage in a pencil-and-paper sorting task to categorize and link representations of energy transfer in systems, develop a representation translation activity connected to a computer simulation, and review a mini-lab connected to an assessment that includes multiple representations. We will also discuss strategies for adding representations to legacy AP Chemistry Free Response questions.
