This presentation demonstrates approaches to incorporating singing, moving, and active participation in the theory classroom to enhance students’ learning of aural, non-aural and sight-reading skills. Using the AP Music Theory exam as the basis for discussion, participants will explore strategies intended to increase student engagement, promote musicianship, and support exam success. We’ll examine how students can gain better understanding of musical relationships by using solfege and rhythm counting syllables. Participants will engage in activities focused on Free Response Questions 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7 and on honing students’ understanding of cadences, tonality, and meter. Specific attention will be given to Skills 3.A., 3.B., 3. D., 3. E., and 4.D of the Curriculum Framework.
