AP Annual Conference Submission
Jennifer McNabb
Professor and Head, Department of History
University of Northern Iowa
Participants will examine the results of the 2019 AP European History Exam with the Chief Reader. In addition to providing detailed information on score distributions and evidence of specific areas of student success, the presentation will also focus on those areas and tasks that students found most challenging. In particular, an emphasis will be placed on the application of historical reasoning skills and disciplinary practices, the writing of essays (particularly the development of theses and arguments), and the use of evidence. A substantial portion of the presentation and discussion will focus on the development of strategies that will help students in developing more sophisticated responses to short answer questions, long essay questions, and document-based questions. Similarly, the session will offer tips on teaching specific historical reasoning skills such as comparison, causation, and continuity and change.
