Pre-AP for Math
AP Annual Conference Submission
The first part would focus on the data driven approach adopted to identify gaps in the instruction of freshman math courses utilizing randomly designed surveys and interviews. Each identified gap would be discussed along with strategies to overcome the gap. Next, we will focus on the initiative to create an active learning classroom and enhance student-faculty interaction. We will discuss strategies which resulted in an enhanced interaction naturally. Due to the limited availability of teaching computer labs, several sections of the freshman math class were randomly selected for the actively learning format and remaining sections used traditional classroom instruction. We will discuss the assessment of the initiatives comparing these and also with the prior data. Overall, due to the active learning format the student’s success has improved by over 20%, and course withdrawal rate has decreased by 80%. The institutional data also shows a strong positive impact on persistence rate.
