AP Annual Conference Submission
The AVID system recognizes there is an achievement gap. This gap is comprised of opportunity and expectation gaps. This system offers strategies designed and scaffolded to bring the opportunity gap closer to the expectation gap; thus closing the achievement gap. Instilling an AVID culture of rigor at the elementary level sets the expectation of success in advanced coursework. Implementation of the AVID system scaffolds opportunities by distributing the responsibility for implementation from district-wide to school-wide to classrooms. Students exiting elementary and middle schools obtain vital college readiness skills and strategies setting the stage for success in advanced coursework. Students enter high school equipped to challenge AP coursework. Our session will share our district implementation blueprint to establish a sound AVID/AP readiness system and share best practice skills and strategies introduced at elementary, embedded and refined at the secondary level.
