The session is centered around the importance of experiential learning in history and how it fits into AP’s new curriculum framework. Participants will be given examples of lessons where students are assigned specific characters for an event or time period. Students would then be in “character” the day of the event. The session will then look in depth at a few of these examples to demonstrate how these lessons fit in the AP framework, as well as how to adjust these lessons to fit individual classrooms. Examples of lessons include the Berlin Conference of 1884 and Partition of Africa, Enlightenment coffeehouses, a French Revolutionary tribunal, Feudalism, trial of Andrew Jackson, Monroe Doctrine simulation, Mercantilism card game, Progressive Speed Dating, and Mexican American War Tea Party. Teachers will use living history lessons to illustrate the complexity of historic situations, which works to deepen student understanding of chronology, interpretation and analysis.
