Our session celebrates the AP Lang goal of developing informed citizens. The lessons presented center on civic engagement and features collaboration with the League of Women Voters (LWV), a national, non-partisan organization. We will share how students can use anchor texts - essays, articles, and documentary film - to study civic engagement and learn to analyze argument. Participants will also learn how students can apply their knowledge of visual rhetoric to create their own persuasive materials. This project involves a real audience, the LWV, who assess and provide feedback on students’ work. Finally, we will discuss how students engage in the research process by using the LWV’s method of study as a model. Teachers learn how to guide students through the process of selecting a class issue, studying the issue, and presenting their position before an authentic audience. Finally, participants will have time to consider how to collaborate with their own local LWV.
