AP Annual Conference Submission
We believe rigorous free response questions can and should be incorporated throughout the year, beginning with the first chapter. This allows students to work and refine their answers over time until they have mastered not only the mathematics, but also the justifications and reasoning that is needed to score well on this test component. In this session, we will share how we use student collaboration, feedback, and discourse to analyze free response questions. These ideas have increased student engagement and have yielded very high scores for our classes. These methods give students access to rigorous practice throughout the course of the school year. Participants will spend time analyzing their curricular sequencing and will make plans to incorporate free response questions from the start of the school year in their AP Calculus AB classes. Participants will also plan activities that will foster constructing viable arguments and critiquing the reasoning of others.
