In a play, every line a character says on stage is part of that character's strategy to achieve a purpose in a rhetorical situation. In rehearsal, an actor’s first goal is to uncover these strategies and purposes, and actors have developed many effective techniques for doing so. Students of A.P. Lang can use actors' skills to tackle difficult texts in class and on the exam. By learning to think of any text as if it was spoken by an 'actor' on a 'stage' to an 'audience' or 'scene partner,' students can strengthen their analysis and make their ideas more concrete, specific, and realistic. This workshop will give teachers without backgrounds in theatre a new perspective on A.P. Lang. Teachers of A.P. Lit will find this workshop useful, too!
