This session will focus on the full scope of an AP English Language unit created to address the challenges of using civil discourse in the 21st century. Participants will examine a range of methods authors use to address barriers to ethical communication along with the rhetorical stances found in these pieces. Participants will be able to identify the components of civil discourse and how it can be used to compose a Rogerian argument. They will understand the process of presenting a balanced argument about a controversial issue with an emphasis on opposing points of view and audience identification. Participants will be able to use resources that assist in identifying the validity and bias of source material used to support a claim. These learning outcomes can all be applied to the creation and application of lesson plans in the participants’ classrooms, ideally for AP Language units that teach techniques students can apply to all three of the AP exam essay questions.
