All of the topic areas in the APES course are interrelated and human ecology is a theme throughout the course. Humans alter natural systems, yet our survival depends on living sustainably with the natural world. In this hands-on session, participants will engage in activities that connect human population dynamics and resource use with issues surrounding pollution to our air, water and waste stream, and their impacts on human and ecosystem health (25-35% of the APES course). The presenter will share with participants multi-faceted lesson plans that incorporate real-world case studies, interactive technology and hands-on activities designed to supplement textbook instruction and enhance students’ understanding of the concepts presented. Activity formats include concept mapping, debate, labs, life-cycle analyses and role playing simulations. All of the presented lessons are clearly linked to the APES framework, as well as NGSS.
