Anchoring themes in biology provide students with a framework to connect diversified concepts throughout science. These themes allow students to participate in multiple laboratory experiences that may seem unrelated on the surface when in reality they are intimately connected in numerous ways. Stranding multiple laboratory experiences together while related to an anchoring theme is a much more meaningful way for students to make connections and gain technical skills. The presenter will share ideas of an anchoring theme and possible laboratory experiences that can tackle that theme from multiple angles. Participants will consider ways to take current classroom activities and discussions and connect them to the objectives and outcomes of each laboratory activity. Participants will also discuss ways in which students can communicate and demonstrate what they have learned in a highly impactful manner.
