This session addresses the rewards of inviting all students into a course that focuses on literature of fact, evaluating information, civil discourse, and argumentation: AP English Language. Through assignments based on student choice, the implementation of a standards-based grading schema, and the opportunity to mix grade and ability levels in the same room, this session describes the benefits of dismantling institutional practices that recapitulate a harmful meritocracy, and reinforces the reality that gatekeeping for AP courses defies data indicating more students are capable of success in the program than have access (Packer, 2017). This presentation details a diverse school context and discusses curricular choices to foster a more inclusive course. Attendees will leave equipped to reimagine this AP course with grading techniques, discussions of student products, assessment ideas, and pacing suggestions for units of study that make content more accessible for all learners.
