Pre-AP for Social Science
AP Annual Conference Submission
The material in the Pre-AP program, while rigorous and appropriate for most high school learners, is simply too challenging for students that enter high school reading far beneath a ninth grade level. In this session, both Pre-AP teachers and special education co-teachers will discuss strategies for adapting the curriculum to meet the needs of these students, all while keeping the same outcomes of the curriculum. Map, chart, and graph interpretation skills will be examined, as well as student-focused exercises that will allow even struggling readers to analyze, interpret, understand, and respond to some of the more complex Pre-AP reading passages. Using data gathered from both Pre-AP and standardized testing, this session will allow educators to develop strategies of their own that will truly make the Pre-AP curriculum equitable and accessible to all students.
