Results for Question #2 from the 2014 AP Chemistry Exam (3.99/10), Question #3 from 2015 (3.72/10), Questions # 2(4.39/10) & 7(1.76/4) from 2016, and Question #3 (2.95/10) from 2017 indicate that students have misconceptions related to weak/strong acid and base species (Big Idea 3). Recent exam questions were designed to demonstrate student understanding of conjugate acids and bases, writing net ionic equations, determining the concentration of conjugates during a titration, appropriate choice of an indicator, the relationship between pH, pKa and Ka, and the ability to sketch a graph of a weak base-strong acid titration. In this “hands-on” session, participants will explore an inquiry lab "Why Is Sodium Acetate Added to Your Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips?", designed to support Learning Objectives 3.1, 3.2, 3.4, and 3.7; and Science Practices 1-7. A discussion of best practices for implementing this inquiry-based activity follows the exploration.
