Specifically in schools that are beginning their AP programs, many "straight A" and advanced students find themselves in a position where they are being pushed to enroll in Pre-AP or AP classes. These same students routinely decline those invitations because they are worried about their grades. Our students are conditioned to believe that the letter grades they earn in their classes prove that they are good students. Many, when approached about taking AP classes, will say that they are concerned about their GPA and how it will look when they are choosing a college. There is a misconception that they will not achieve an A, or that somehow one B on their high school transcript will derail their chances of making it to a major university. We can only solve this problem by education our students, and their parents / guardians, about the positives that come from taking AP classes.
