AP Annual Conference Submission
Kyle Anderson
Director of Advanced Studies and Postsecondary Readiness
North Kansas City Schools
This session is designed to help AP history teachers cultivate a classroom focused on "writing to learn", "writing to assess", reflection, and goal setting. Participants will learn how to scaffold historical writing skills throughout the school year to help them support learners with varying degrees of readiness for AP history classes. Participants in the session will engage in at least five strategies they can immediately implement for continuous improvement of student writing in any AP history or Pre AP for Social Sciences classroom. Teachers will learn four strategies on how to manage the grading load that coincides with adding writing in any course, and how to leverage student reflection, goal setting, and self-assessment to improve their writing over the course of the year. Finally, participants will also learn how to leverage these strategies to build a classroom culture of personal growth and improvement, instead of one focused on just earning a score.
