Government and Politics: U.S.
AP Annual Conference Submission
This session will examine how to teach students the skill of reading U.S. Supreme Court cases as primary sources in order to developing and strengthen critical thinking and analysis skills with a specific emphasis on the 15 required landmark cases required for the AP U.S. Government and Politics exam. This session, led by three attorneys/teachers, will demonstrate reading strategies to better assist students in understanding and analyzing cases. Rather than being confused by procedural history or presenting only a synopsis of the cases, this session will show how teachers can teach students to read, understand, and apply U.S. Supreme Court cases in the original language of the cases. Presenters will demonstrate critical questioning techniques, assessment possibilities, and reading strategies to promote engaged and meaningful connections to case law.
