Syntax is one of the most intimidating techniques for students to comprehend and for teachers to teach. This session will help! Using past exam poetry and prose prompts, presenters will lead participants through a discovery of strategies to analyze how syntax affects the meaning of a passage and how students can quickly and efficiently explain it on the exam. Presenters will also share creative yet practical activities that participants can immediately implement in the classroom, including using found poetry, manipulating word order, analyzing punctuation’s effect on syntax, using effective language, and incorporating student self-assessment. Participants will design a syntax activity, and the session will conclude with small group discussion and whole group sharing. Participants will receive an informational packet and access to electronic sources. Resources will include prompts, student examples, success criteria, and syntactical vocabulary.
