The Question Formulating Technique (QFT) allows instructors to remove themselves from the front of the classroom and allows students to act as investigators of primary documents. Students begin by writing questions and generating knowledge about an instructor selected primary source. Students then use these questions as a jumping off point for research and investigation. Using the QFT engages students who might normally not be interested in traditional instructional approaches. This simple technique also helps students overcome fear they might face when approaching documents in a DBQ or in multiple-choice assessments. During the session, participants will participate in a QFT lesson, learn how to write and adopt a QFT lesson in their own classroom, and participants will write and plan one QFT lesson for their classroom.
