183 - Framework to Solve Extreme Value Problems

Extreme Value Free Response Questions are a vexing combination of reoccurring, and low scoring, on both the AB and BC Calculus Exams. Participants will explore a framework that can be utilized to help students better understand extreme value free response questions. This framework will help students organize and present their work on complicated extreme value AP problems. Participants will examine a free response question from a past AP exam, then rework students' initial entry into extreme value questions while keeping AP scoring in mind. Sample problems with a variety of contexts that can be used with students will be shared.

Learning Objectives:

• Participants will implement a framework that can be integrated into their AP Calculus course to assist students in answering all questions that request a maximum or minimum on an interval.
• Participants will network and solve problems with other Calculus teachers.
• Participants will better understand the AP scoring philosophy for extreme value problems.
